Nile Day 2021: NBD Reiterates its Commitment to NBI-NBD Partnership

On February 22nd February 2021, the Nile Basin Discourse (NBD) joined Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) to celebrate the Regional Nile day that was hosted by the Republic of Uganda.  The event held virtually attracted different stakeholders, government officials, and Development Partners among others. The theme for this year's celebration was “Rethinking Regional Investments in the Nile Basin”.

At the virtual occasion, NBD made a statement delivered by NBD Board Secretary General Mr. Donald KASONGI on behalf of NBD Board Chair person, Prof. Muawia Hamid SHADDAD. (Read full statement also attached at the bottom)

In his message, he reiterated NBD commitment to continue cooperation with NBI to ensure that the current strategic partnership yields benefit to Nile Basin citizens.

At the same event, a 5-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between NBI and NBD. The MoU intends to strategically stimulate and facilitate partnership on activities and projects between the two institutions.
The just signed MoU is effective from 2021 until 2025. It builds on the previous successful MoUs that were signed between the two parties in the previous years.

In 2019, the planned activities were guided by the new strategy and the Project Appraisal Document (PAD) on Additional Financing (AF). Thus, the work plan was to implement a section of the strategic engagements stipulated in the NBD Strategy 2018 - 2022 titled "Aquawareness and Empowerment' that are in line with the activities prioritized in the Project Appraisal Document of the AF for the year 2017 - 2019.

From January to December 2019, NBD focused on activities of the three major components specified under CIW A/WB Grant TFO 15834, (AF); Strengthening the NBD Secretariat, Improved Communication & Outreach, and Capacity building for NBD members. The title of the Project was maintained as, ''Engaging Civil Society for Social and Climate Resilience in the Nile Basin''.
